Flu Vaccine composition for the 2021 Flu Season
Each year the World Health Organization (WHO) puts forward its recommendations for the composition of influenza virus for us in the Southern Hemisphere influenza season. The WHO have recommended two strain changes for 2021. The Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee (AIVC) will follow the WHO recommendations.
Egg-based Quadrivalent influenza vaccines for the Southern Hemisphere:
- an A/Victoria/2570/2019 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
- an A/Hong Kong/2671/2019 (H3N2)-like virus;
- a B/Washington/02/2019-like (B/Victoria lineage) virus; and
- a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like (B/Yamagata lineage) virus.
The AIVC recommendation for the composition of influenza vaccines for Australia in 2021 differs from last year's southern hemisphere recommendation with the inclusion of two new strains for the A (H1N1)-like and A (H3N2)-like viruses.
